Nowgen is one of six Genetics Knowledge Parks (GKPs) funded by the Departments of Health and Trade & Industry that have been established across the UK to ensure that the outcomes of human genetics research are successfully applied.
Nowgen is a partnership between Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancaster University and the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester. Nowgen has robust research and work programmes aimed at improving genetics services, developing ethical & legal frameworks, public consultation, professional education and outreach.
The Nowgen Centre, located on the Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust site, provides a public reception, exhibition and interactive areas, and meeting/teaching rooms. The £3.5M Nowgen Centre, was funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund and opened in January 2005.
Nowgen provides news and information, education, guidance and training in human genetics to the public, education sector, health professionals and industry, and is developing an active programme of events, courses and activities.
The Nowgen Network - a virtual Genetics Knowledge Park - aims to catalyse the sharing of genetic knowledge, to deliver benefits of improved healthcare, education and commercial return. In collaboration with their partner, MerseyBIO, a state-of-the-art browser-based software system is being developed.
