Biohealth Informatics (NIBHI)
NIBHI has been formed as a collaborative venture between the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster, Central Lancashire (UCLAN), Salford, Liverpool John Moores University (JMU) and AstraZeneca.
The central mission of NIBHI is to facilitate the application of Bio-Health Informatics theory into practice and to ensure that Bio-Health Informatics research is informed by the needs of the biological and clinical research communities and those of the regional pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector.
The Institute is a focal point for the co-ordination of
Northwest Bio-Health Informatics research, development and
training, facilitating collaborative activities within and between
the academic, industrial and health communities.
The common aim of NIBHI's research is multi-scale integration of discovery across the life and health sciences. As the North West is a hotbed of Bioinformatics research (and accompanying Health-Informatics research), especially in the region's universities, scientists from all sectors can benefit from this wealth of expertise through specialised Bioinformatics training not just through post-graduate qualifications, but through tailor-made training, consultancy and workshops that will contribute to the CPD of the region's Bioinformaticians and biologists. Also, this will help progress Bioinformatics research (e.g., software development) through the incorporation of usability studies.
At the University of Manchester, a fully equipped new auditorium located in the Michael Smith Building has a capacity of 100 people. 30 of these places have a laptop facility that can access the University network. The auditorium also has an Access Grid node, which allows training, seminars and lectures to be given at remote locations that are also on the Access Grid.
