Biotechnology Incubation

Summary:

A feasibility study was conducted to determine whether the facility could undergo a cost-effective conversion to a biotechnology "grow-on" incubator. This included a market needs analysis, benchmarking against other facilities and development planning.

Analysed and surveyed the biomedical cluster of companies in the Northwest region with a particular focus upon Greater Manchester. The report detailed growth trends over the period 2002 to 2012 using historical data held and monitored by Bionow over this period and identified significant areas of growth and opportunities for support and development.

Report detailing the academic, clinical and industrial strengths of Liverpool and Manchester. Its aims was to identify key strengths, synergies and opportunities to align the offerings of Liverpool and Manchester thereby allowing appropriate bodies within the two Cities to enhance the overall investment case from a national and international perspective.

Working with 2Bio prepared a report to Liverpool Vision detailing areas of focus for economic development which would drive continued growth of the life sciences industry in the Liverpool City Region. The particular focus for Bionow was strategies to foster increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Analysed and surveyed the Yorkshire and Humberside region to assess the biopharmaceutical cluster and recommended actions to strengthen the interactions which would stimulate economic growth.

Economic analysis of the life science sector for Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), including mapping companies, academic institutions, supply chain and NHS capability. Desk research using in-house resources and databases combined with semi-structured interviews where employed to generate recommendations of how to best leverage the healthcare and life science industry for economic benefit.

Designed, marketed and managed a new university bioincubator facility for biomedical start up companies. Completed specifications in collaboration with the architects and advised on equipment purchase for the facility. Achieving 100% occupancy, the tenants were managed over a three year period ensuring the needs of start up biomedical companies were being met.

An NHS Hospital Foundation Trust requested assistance in securing planning consent for the redevelopment of a former hospital site. A conceptual masterplan was delivered which united new and existing activities and brought a campus style feel to the site with commercial potential. Key attractors were identified and used to build a campus concept based on Healthy Ageing which provided an entire ecosystem for product and service research and development.

Design, build and maintenance of the UK database for all Pharmaceutical, Medical Biotechnology, Medical Technology and Industrial Biotechnology companies in the UK on behalf BIS, UKTI and DoH. The database contains commercial and financial data on over 5,000 UK companies.

Development and project management of a Technology Strategy Board (TSB) multi-million pound funded project to develop a suite of platform agnostic applications to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding population of individuals with long term conditions. Includes provision of safety and security monitoring, integration with developing telehealth services, access to information and advocacy to support assisted living and social network integration.

A business model for a "Regional Technology Centre for Regenerative Medicine" was developed for the Northern 8 (N8) group of universities to identify how regional academic and clinical expertise could be coordinated and leveraged to benefit of industry. It involved mapping academic and clinical expertise, identifying industry needs, benchmarking of other centres, formulating Unique Selling Points (USPs), developing a business model, project plan and accessing funding.

A unique collaboration of healthcare, engineering, product development and design professionals to allow companies to ‘fast-track’ the development of healthcare products, services and technologies. Partners include: Centre for Design Research, Resource Centre for Innovation & Design, INEX microsystems and nanotechnology facility, NHS Innovations, C2M (UK) Ltd and Kinneir Dufort Ltd. 38 design projects were completed involving 30 different clients.

Developed and project managed a collaboration between North East academics and SME’s piloting user-led design. Working with universities a multi-disciplinary team of software, product and electronic engineers collated information from users and their carers on the product features for tracking individuals while they are going about their daily lives. The outputs from this project were a number of prototype medical devices.
