NBC Access Fund
The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), via its biotechnology cluster group Bionow, is administering the DEBRR and ERDF funded National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC) Access Fund.
The Access Fund supports the development and early stage production of clinical grade biopharmaceuticals in the UK by providing grants to small and medium sized (SME) biotechnology companies.

The Access Fund provides grant funding to eligible companies to pay for the services of the NBC, which are provided on a fee-for-service basis by the NBC Operator, Eden Biodesign.
NBC services include:
- Guidance and advice (an advisory service is provided free of charge to UK SMEs and organisations such as universities, research institutes and the NHS).
- Process design and development.
- Pre-clinical manufacturing.
- GMP: early stage manufacture (primarily Phase I).
- Formulation.
The Access Fund totals £2.7 million and provides grant support to eligible SMEs for services delivered by the NBC during the period of its operation as a publicly funded project (2006-2008). It is made is made up of two components:
- Funding specifically for Merseyside (Objective One Area) SMEs.
- Funding for the rest of the UK (excluding Merseyside SMEs)
