Green light for Redx cancer drugs research unit
Plans to develop a state-of-the-art drug research centre in Liverpool took a significant step forward on 1 November with the award of £5.9m from the Government's Regional Growth Fund to support a project which will create up to 250 bioscience jobs in the city. Redx Pharma Ltd has received a conditional offer letter for the grant, following an announcement made by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. The investment will help to finance an initial two-year research and development phase into promising new drugs for the treatment of cancer.

Ebiox raises funds to support further growth
Medical and hygiene products developer Ebiox has raised £700,000 to support its further growth. The company commented that the rights issue would 'strengthen its balance sheet and provide further working capital funding to grow the business'. Ebiox produces decontamination products designed to assist in the control of potentially harmful pathogens and reduce the risk of cross infection in hospitals and other clincal environments.

Epistem raises £2.8m to roll out Genedrive
Epistem is to raise £2.8m to fund the roll-out of its Genedrive device. The company is to raise the money through a placing at 350p per share. It is placing 793,398, which is equivalent to around 10% of it existing share capital. Genedrive is a portable device which can be used to provide a molecular diagnosis of patient samples, meaning that diseases or cancers can be diagnosed in remote locations within 20 minutes.
Also, Epistem announced a partnership with Dr Matthew Hardman at The University of Manchester in which novel preclinical models for cutaneous wound healing, developed within Dr Hardman's laboratory, will be transferred to Epistem. Epistem and The University of Manchester have been awarded a Knowledge Transfer Partnership grant from the Technology Strategy Board and Medical Research Council to optimise, validate and commercialise new preclinical assays for wound repair.

Biomedical fund invests in Albert Medical
Albert Medical Devices, which develops products for the urology sector, has secured an investment from the £25m North West Fund for Biomedical as part of a £210,000 funding round. The company has been awarded a £50,000 Pathfinder Investment from the fund which will be used to take on new members of staff and begin manufacturing its Melio product. The device is a discreet aid for self-managing urinary incontinence.

Sinclair IS Pharma sells £11m drug
Pharmceutical company Sinclair IS Pharma has sold Mysoline, a drug used to treat epilepsy, for £11.1m in cash. The company, which has sold the drug to Laboratories Serb SAS of France, commented that the move was in line with its strategy to dispose of non-strategic assets and focus on dermatology, wound care and its hospital supportive care products.

Assura raises £110m
Primary care property company Assura Group has raised £110m through a ten-year bond. The money was raised through the issuance of a ten-year senior secured bond at a fixed rate coupon of 4.75 per cent. It was raised via its subsidiary Assura Properties. The bond finance aims to help the company repay a loan from National Australia Bank that was due to mature in March 2013.

Biomedical fund invest £100,000 in a further two companies
The University of Salford's first ever drug development spin-out company Onco-NX has secured a £50,000 pathfinder investment, while Manchester-based Kanichi Research Services, a developer of sensors for the healthcare market, has also received £50,000. Dr Penny Attridge, senior investment manager at Spark Impact, said 'Spark Impact is continuing to invest in exciting and interesting opportunities, over the last few months we have completed six pathfinder investments across the very wide and diverse biomedical sector.

Renovo board to consider all options
Renovo's chairman Mark Ferguson has said the business is considering 'all options available to it'. Professor Ferguson said 'Renovo is well funded and its future strategy is aimed at maximising shareholder value. The company will consider all options available to it which may include acquisitions and mergers of external companies in addition to realising value from its current intellectual property portfolio where possible.

Cyprotex improves drug testing software
Drug testing company Cyprotex has completed a major upgrade of the software it uses to predict pharmacokinetic changes caused by drug compounds. The company said the Cloe PK software has already been shown to be able to predict via computer modelling aspects of human pharmacokinetics better than extrapolating results from studies using animals.

PhD Studentship -Institute for Materials Research & Innovation (3.5 years duration)
Applications are invited for an EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD studentship, awarded via the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network, to join the Auxetic Materials Research Group within the Institute for Materials Research & Innovation (IMRI) at the University of Bolton in collaboration with Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.
