Northwest Biotech
England's Northwest is a premier European pharma/biotech location, with 200 biomedical companies employing over 20,000 staff. In 2003 the region exported £3.8B in pharmaceutical products, making it the UK's largest producer of pharmaceuticals.
The region is home to pharmaceutical giants, such as:
- AstraZeneca (their largest R&D and manufacturing facilities are in the NW)
- GSK
- Eli Lilly
- Bristol-Myers Squibb
- MedImmune (now part of AstraZeneca)
- Novartis
- Sanofi-Aventis
The NW has eight universities, producing 25,000 life science, medical and technology graduates (excluding nursing degrees - a further 10,000) per year.
