Advancing Medical Technology in the Atlantic Area

Bionow will be working to help SMEs engage with a world-class, transnational capability in advanced technologies for medical applications, across the Atlantic Area. In addition SMEs will benefit from connections within an international network of medical technology businesses.

The capabilities of the partnership are far-reaching:

NUI Galway (Ireland) is the lead partner and brings expertise in both biomedical and photonics applications through its Curam Centre for Medical Devices and the NCLA Laser centre respectively. NUI Galway is establishing a combined additive and subtractive pilot manufacturing test bed for future biomaterials and printed electronics applications.

INL the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory in Braga, Portugal was founded to perform interdisciplinary research, deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit if society. INL, in health applications, is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of ageing-related diseases, developing sensors, lab-on-a-chip solutions, new biomarkers and bio interfaces, and tailored nanostructures and materials.

ALPhANOV based at Bordeaux, France is a leader in laser machining and photonic applications and has a proven track record in providing full range photonics solutons from feasability to final product.

STFC Daresbury, UK, collaborates extensively with industry in providing access to work class, leading edge scientific facilities and advanced engineering expertise, including significant investment in additive manufacturing.

FIDIS and the Clinical Hospital at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain wotk together to define diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and develop prototype solutions at high technology readiness levels.

Atlanpole Biotherapies is a leading healthcare cluster with over 100 members working on future therapies (biomaterials, ATNPs, immunotherapy, radiopharmaceuticals, vectors including drug delivery systems) with a personalized medicine perspective and has a proven track recoed in delivering solutions from target discovery to clinical evaluation. Atlanpole Biotherapies covers the Pays de le Loire, Bretagne and Centre Val de Loire regions in France.

Bionow works across the North of England and North Wales supporting biomedical business development through its membership rogramme, University engagement and specialist events. Bionow supports 250 members spanning biotech, pharma, diagnostics, medical technologies, healthcare, contract research / manufacture and the specialist supply chain. Bionow maintains a database of over 1100 organisations in the northern UK biomedical sector.

Over the coming weeks we will be approaching SMEs in the areas of biomaterials, diagnostics, regenerative medicine, devices, sensors and drug delivery to develop their capabilities and accelerate their product to market. Companies will be engaged in a progressively deeper manner with more in-depth assistance offered at each stage and a series of dissemination events and activities are being planned.

The Partners met at the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), in Braga, Portugal on 2 & 3 May to agree and plan forward activities over the next 12 months.
